The most decorated gaming event of the year took place at the Planet Media Cinemas at Prestige Plaza, Nairobi. The Pro Series Gaming (P.S.G) 2017 Championships debuted last year with Call Of Duty World War II being the game of competition on the PlayStation 4 platform. The event was one game industry banger.
You know when one mentions the word “world-class” how much weight these words have? These are the words that Naiccon were gunning for. We can satisfactorily say, they did not disappoint. The quality of everything right from presentation was eye-catching. The stage was put up really well right from the lights to the game setup and media recording and streaming equipment was amazing. The sponsorship was table had some heavyweights from Naiccon, Vivid Gold, Planet Media Cinemas, MoSound Events, Whats Good LIVE, NRG Wave, ASUS Kenya and Liquid Telecom.
The teams on roster were East Africa’s renowned teams such as the Watchmen, Team R4ZR, Ego Gaming, BroScience, Gunslingers, Spartans, UltraNoobs and Fellowship Of The Bling. The teams started off with the group stages setting off grounds of who qualifies to be in the Winners bracket and Losers bracket. The event was well attended despite it being just 2 days to Christmas when most guys are travelling for holidays which was surprisingly good.
The Watchmen gave some heavy competition acing the Winners bracket all the way to the Finals. Notable efforts came from teams such as BroScience, Ego Gaming and Team R4ZR. Majority of the teams have wealth f knowledge in the eSports arena with some having competed in events for over 5 years.
The PC Pro players Spartans came and found the PS4 console arena a totally different battleground altogether. Within the team was our very own renowned YouTuber and Kenyan gaming face James Karanu aka jAMeeFX. (Photo: from the left is Suhail Woods and James Karanu)
His team started off on a struggling note dropping to the Losers bracket after losing to Ego Gaming but almost got their hands on the semi-finalist spot of the Loser bracket but tasted defeat to Fellowship of the Bling. James went to the commentators table to give his views of the event and add some commentary and analysis to the Finals. In the whole event, the UltraNoobs were the underdogs of the tournament.
They fought through thick and thin winning every game apart from their first encounter that dropped them to the Losers bracket. Their main winning point was the Search And Destroy mode that worked because of their strategic plan. They eventually made it to the Finals against the Watchmen. It was a hectic battle for them as they tried to beat the Call Of Duty juggernauts but were defeated leaving the Watchmen as were the eventual winners of the tournament.
The entrance of the event was filled with gamers trying out the driving simulator and Virtual Reality games, and nerds playing out the Star Wars card games. One of the most notable faces was Tekken and FIFA Pro Player and YouTuber Davy Kamanzi aka DavyK17(pictured: Inset first photo)
With such standards, our expectation of the next PSG event in 2018 will be very high and the turnout will be huge. This has shown us that the potential of the gaming industry is big and still growing even bigger. We look forward to PSG 2018 and more years to come as the organization is now perpetual and more gaming events come through. James Karanu had this to say about the event:
“Amazing event guys. World class elite quality event. It’s even great. PSG is here to stay and is changing the gaming industry in the East African region. I can’t wait to see our brothers in Uganda, GamersNights UG, Ethiopia’s best from D5, Rwanda’s Abagamers and even South Africa and Egypt in on this. This is a dream actualized. Thanks to all the sponsors who are supporting the PSG movement. Naiccon, Vivid Gold, Mosound Events, WhatsGood LIVE, Safaricom, Liquid Telecom, ASUS, NRG and many others. Bravo to you all. I also hope to see the best of the best gaming and eSports competitors here. Its about to get really competitive.”
